Winthrop alumni from the class of 2021, Morgan Alexander, spent his undergraduate career working as the women’s basketball team manager and as a Winthrop News anchor.
Alexander started working as the manager of the women’s basketball team in 2018. He was in charge of the behind-the-scenes activities for the team.
“I saw a flyer in the student email asking if anyone wanted to be a manager for the Women’s Basketball team and it has been history since then,” Alexander said. “I was in charge of washing jerseys, making sure everything is packed for the games, also making sure everything is set up on the bench for games and practices.”
Alexander became involved with the Winthrop News as it was a requirement for Advanced Broadcast Journalism.
Alexander reported on the Winthrop Volleyball team, especially when they won the Big South Championship in 2019. He also reported on the 2020 presidential election and the presidential debates.
“Being an anchor for the Winthrop News was a dream come true,” Alexander said. “I love to talk and be on camera, so the opportunity to anchor was the best! I was able to write my own script and work on my own news story. I do see myself doing something similar in the future whether it’s on radio or television.”
Aside from working with the women’s basketball team and the Winthrop news, Alexander participated in Delta Zetas event, Big Man on Campus.
“My friend is in the sorority Delta Zeta and I told her my sophomore year that I would do it before I graduated, so that’s why I decided to participate,” Alexander said. “It was weird because it was during COVID, so I didn’t get to put on the performance and pageantry that they usually have. However, I was able to edge by the runner-up in the last second of the event to win Big Man on Campus.”
The proceeds from the event went to the Starkey Hearing Foundation and the Spartanburg School for the Deaf and Blind.
Alexander attended other various events on campus.
“I will always remember going to Dina’s Place and falling in love with Marvel after watching Infinity War or seeing Bernie Sanders at the amphitheater,” Alexander said.
Alexander graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in mass communication with a concentration in broadcast journalism and a minor in coach. He is currently the video coordinator for the Winthrop Women’s Basketball team and started this position in 2021.
Being the manager of the women’s basketball team was beneficial for Alexander as he was familiar with the head coach and “i’ve been able to have a connection with the coach which helped me get a job right after college and help me further my career,” Alexander said.
“I’m in charge of making sure the film is clipped and I also make graphics for the social media,” Alexander said. “My favorite part is the relationships I’ve been able to have within the organization and also the traveling we get to do!”
Alexander is not as involved as an alumnus as he would like but does try to attend some events that the alumni association coordinates.
“I will remember the connections and friendships that I had and continue to have at Winthrop,” Alexander said.
