On Oct 11, Winthrop University Police Department received a call from a student’s parent inquiring about his child falsely using his identification for student loans.
According to the Reporting Office (R/O), the father stated that the student, identified as a Winthrop Affiliate, has been using his identification while applying for Parent Plus loans since 2019, without his consent.
According to the father, he stated the Parent Plus loan reported to totaled up to $37,500.29. The father advised the R/O that he just noticed the concern due to a refund check being mailed to him from Winthrop University in his name.
The father stated that the loan company, Nelnet, inform him to file a police report as he awaits a fraud incident packet due to the claims.
At this time, this is still an ongoing investigation. Identifications of both parties were not presented in this article due to confidentiality purposes.
