Winthrop alumni basketball players are owners of The Broman Academy

Winthrop alumni and previous men’s basketball players Anders and Bjorn Broman opened the Broman Academy in the Rock Hill area.

According to the Broman Academy website, their mission “is to help athletes of all ages pursue their dreams by making the most of their abilities through training and hard work.”

Anders graduated from Winthrop in 2018 and Bjorn graduated the year after. Both brothers played on the men’s basketball team under Coach Pat Kelsey and played in the NCAA tournament in Milwaukee.

“We feel blessed that we were able to play on the same team, start so many games together, and form these memories as brothers,” Anders Broman said. “Not too many people get to play at a Division I level, let alone with their brother. We are very grateful for our experiences!”

The two began basketball training while in college and ran some summer camps in their hometown in Minnesota.

In our hometown, we started doing summer training with younger players from our school and that started to grow” Broman said. “That was where we learned about our passion of helping kids improve their game, and a lot about training and what it would take to be successful in this area.”

While leading training sessions in Minnesota, the Broman brothers received guidance from mentors.

“When we were home, we had some awesome mentors and when we were playing, that took us under their wing. We want to have that same effect on this next generation of basketball players coming up” Anders Broman said.

The Broman brothers had help and guidance from mentors when working through the process of starting this business.

“The process of starting this business began with quite a bit of help from some business mentors” Broman said. “We knew about the training aspect, but we needed some guidance on the correct way to format our company. It is still a work in progress, but we are still learning every single day!”

The late Will Starks played a crucial role in the Broman brothers’ athletic career while competing in high school in Duluth Minnesota.

“When we were playing basketball, we had a mentor and trainer named Will Starks who took us under his wing and helped push us to become the players that we became,” Broman said. “Because of him, we learned how we can make a career of basketball outside the typical coaching route.”

The Broman Academy uses an “overload” method when training their athletes.

“For our training method, we ‘overload’ our players so their minds are working just as hard during the workout as their physical bodies,” Broman said. “We force our players to have to comprehend and do multiple things at the same time. We found that this translates to game play as players have to comprehend so much during games.”

The Broman Academy holds training camps and leagues in Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Lake Wylie, Charlotte, and surrounding areas. They also will travel to Minnesota and other destinations for holiday camps.

“Our favorite part about training young players is seeing them improve and gain confidence in themselves,” Broman said. “We love seeing that translate to other areas of their lives as well.”

Athletes interested in working with the Broman Academy can sign up for the various camps the academy offers. They offer camps, leagues, individual and group training, and strength and training.

“Athletes should train with Broman Academy if they want to improve their physical and mental game,” Broman said. “We will push our athletes outside of their comfort zone. There is no secret formula when it comes to success. If players want to improve, they have to outwork everyone else!”

The Broman Academy also offers the Broman Academy app that allows the brothers to coach players when they are not present. The app gives each player 3 new workouts per week, a 28-day shooting program that evaluates the players shooting ability, strength and conditioning, ball handling and finished workouts.

“The app gives us an opportunity to coach players that are not able to train with us, where that is because they live in a different area or for financial reasons” Broman said. “Our goal is to help everyone have a play going into their own personal workouts, so that they are improving each and every day.”

Players can begin working with the Broman Academy by signing up through their website bromanacademy.com.

“We have been blessed because the Broman Academy is continuing to grow, and our goal is to keep growing and adding more options each and every year,” Broman said.
