Angela Coello Perez, a former Winthrop basketball player who recently graduated in December of 2019, has continued her career in a different country; Spain has been graced with Winthrop’s very on alumna.
Coello Perez graduated after playing 72 games (a total of 1,212 minutes of play) as a Winthrop Eagle. During this time, The 6’1 forward recorded a total of 294 points, 243 rebounds, and 35 assists.
Playing as a forward on Spain’s team, she’s averaging about 10 minutes per game, with about 4 points and 4 rebounds per game. Coello Perez is excited about returning to play in her hometown.
“It feels nice to be back home, not only because I have the opportunity to play professional, but also because I get to see my family and all my friends,” Coello Perez said. “It’s a different lifestyle and I missed it.”
The forward is quickly becoming used to the typical routine with the team.
“A typical day for me here is basically practice in the morning around 10 until about 11:30.,” Coello Perez said. “Then after practice, I go home to shower and eat, maybe take a little nap, and then go back to practice [for] 2 hours or 1 and a half hours and then conditioning. Depending on what day of the week it is, sometimes I meet my friends after or I just come home to hang out with my family.”
With the transition, Coello Perez has learned to push through adversity and has gotten the hang of a few things while working hard to excel in things that are more difficult to conquer.
“The most difficult thing is getting used to this style of basketball and also getting used to the team. At the end of the day, I started with them in the middle of the season so the team has been playing with each other for a long time and I need to get that game as soon as possible.”
“The easiest is probably the routine. At the end of the day I wanted to play and I wanted to do this and my teammates are making the transition very easy, Coello Perez said.
Of course, Coello Perez is thankful for the opportunities that Winthrop gave her.
“Winthrop helped me grow as a person and as a player and I notice that when I’m playing here, Coello Perez said. “I learned that it is very important to be calm and not try to speed the process. It takes time and it is very important not to speed up the process.”
