New Year, New Decade, Same Eagles

The Eagles have been ringing in the new year with an undefeated record in conference play. For those less sports savvy, Since the new year, the Eagles have taken on Longwood, Campbell, High Point and Gardner-Webb.

 

On Thursday, Jan. 2, the Winthrop Eagles took on the Longwood Lancers at the Winthrop Coliseum. The Eagles won 91-67. Hunter Hale was named player of the game with 32 minutes on the floor, recording 29 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Chandler Vaudrin finished the game with 10 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists a triple double.

 

Two days later, on Jan. 4,  the Eagles traveled to Buies Creek, North Carolina and took on the Campbell Fighting Camels, winning 87-72  Chandler Vaudrin was named player of the game with 35 minutes on the floor, recording 16 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists.

 

D.J. Burns was named the Big South Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week and Vaudrin was named Big South Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week, for the week of Dec. 28-Jan. 5.

 

On Jan. 8, the Eagles travelled to play the High Point Panthers. Winthrop won 79-57 and Micheal Anumba was named player of the game with 29 minutes of game play, recording 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

 

On Saturday, Jan. 11, the Eagles played a home game against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs. It was a very intense game, but the Eagles eventually won 99-95 — in triple overtime. Chandler Vaudrin was named player of the game with 48 minutes of game play, recording 24 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

 

After the win against Gardner-Webb, Winthrop men’s basketball has a six game winning streak and is 4-0 in conference play. Their next game is in Hampton, Virginia as they play the Hampton Pirates on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. The men’s next home game is on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m., when they play USC Upstate.

 

Winthrop women’s basketball has also been doing well in the Big South Conference. The Lady Eagles won at home to both Hampton (72-66) and High Point (69-63). Unfortunately, their winning streak was cut short on Jan. 6 by Gardner-Webb, the final score being 59-71. This road loss left the lady eagles at a 2-1 record for the conference.

 

On Jan. 9, the Lady Eagles went on the road and beat USC Upstate, 52-38.

 

On Jan. 11, Winthrop women’s basketball played the Presbyterian Blue Hose at Winthrop Coliseum. The Eagles went into halftime with a 12 point deficit, but came back to win 52-38.

After the win against Presybyterian, the Winthrop women’s basketball has a two game winning streak and is 4-1 in conference play. Their next game is in Radford, Virginia as they play the Radford Highlanders on Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. The women’s next home game is on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m., when they play Longwood.
