“There’s no way in hell Winthrop is this boring”
“Moves? College CANT be this boring”
“Okay, I’m bored”
The Winthrop Class of 2023 Facebook group has at least eight posts like these on it, lamenting the fact that Winthrop is boring and that there isn’t anything to do on campus. But these posts are assuming that college in general is a place that’s going to be fun if you don’t put in any effort.
Sure, if you were looking for a school where there’s a major blowout party every night, then you’re in the wrong place. However, if you came to Winthrop hoping to find a place where you can excel in academics as well as in your social life and you have these complaints, then you just might not be looking in the right places.
There is almost always something happening on campus, whether it’s a play performed by students, a lecture from a guest speaker or a DSU movie or music event. The great thing about a lot of these events also is that you can get cultural event credit for them. You can go to winthrop.edu/culturalevents for a list of events happening. The list is constantly being updated so check it whenever you’re looking for something new to do.
Another thing you might not be considering is that the city of Rock Hill has some awesome things to do and now you can even take the MyRide bus system to get there. On Cherry Road, close to campus, there is Adventure Air Sports, which offers a college night promo every Thursday and Escape Eight, which currently offers two escape rooms for you to puzzle your way out of.
Downtown Rock Hill also has a lot to offer. Explore Old Town and experience the small shops and restaurants you won’t be able to see anywhere else. Every Saturday you can go to the Farmer’s Market at Legal Remedy and on the third Friday of every month you can enjoy Food Truck Fridays, featuring over 25 food trucks and live music.
And don’t forget that we are only a 40-minute drive from the heart of Charlotte. In Charlotte, there are countless things to do, from exploring the skyscrapers in the business district to wandering the streets of the NoDa art district. Enjoy time with friends while exploring the Mint Museum or the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.
If you stay in your dorm and don’t bother to go out and look for anything to do, Winthrop will seem like the most boring place on Earth. But looking into on-campus events and making plans with friends to go explore new places will make your time at Winthrop so much more exciting and enjoyable.
