This article is not about Valentine’s Day

To everyone who will be posting about their pretentious and overly romantic Valentine’s Day: you are missing all the fun and you got the date wrong

The real fun day in February is actually Feb. 15 — Single Awareness Day (lamely named if you ask me). Of course, being in a relationship is fun, cool and makes a lot of people happy. But so does being single! And it is about time being single is valued just as much as all of the Valentines around the globe. It is about time people in a relationship feel the same way single people feel about them for one day. In a world where there is an appreciation day for pizza and orgasms (this is actually a thing), moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas, why would we leave a part of the population behind without their own special day? Don’t they all say “with you it’s Valentine’s Day everyday” anyway?

So let’s recognize all those people who are lucky enough to enjoy the entirety of their bed, whose fries never get stolen and who actually have money after Christmas. This year is about shining light on the ones who are happy with themselves and have some real fun.

When talking about single people, there is always an awkward avoidance of the subject — a politically correct way to handle talking about it that is unnecessary and says a lot about how society views single people. Couples have always been put on a pedestal, while single people have been nicely patted on the back for at least trying. The notion that couples are the ones who deserve to be celebrated is starting to get as old as considering the LGBT community as abnormal. Although we see more and more videos and articles about having things like Galentine’s Day, the actual celebration of being a strong independent person is kept in the dark. But it is still not equally as important when stopping the shaming of single people for at least a month is made a national event.

Let’s spread the real love! The one for everybody and anybody!
