Winthrop University implemented the LiveSafe app as a way for students, faculty, and staff to have an alternative source of emergency communication.
Despite many never having much reason to utilize the app, there was an incident report on Oct. 6 where a student was involved in an assault, that due to the down phone lines in the area, a witness used the LiveSafe app as a last resort due to the outage. By using the app, Winthrop University Police Department were able to be notified about the incident as quickly as possible.
By utilizing the LiveSafe app, users easily report crimes and submit tips directly to the Winthrop University Police Department. The app provides various features that help ensure safety and security on the Winthrop University campus and surrounding areas.
Additionally, the app includes an essential feature called Safe Walk, which lets users share their location with friends, family, or peers while walking to different locations. The shared GPS coordinates allow quick access for emergency purposes.
Other features that are included are emergency maps, important contact information, Clery Act information as well as parking enforcement information.
It’s highly recommended that all Winthrop students download the LiveSafe app for safety and precaution reasons. The app is also compatible with both Apple and Android smartphones.
