With midterms and final exams approaching, students are encouraged to begin utilizing the various free academic services that are offered at Winthrop University.
On the second floor of Bancroft, the English department holds the writing center. This is a space where students can make appointments with a tutor to talk about their prompts, brainstorm, ask questions about citations and sources, and ask specific questions concerning their papers.
“The writing center is an incredibly useful tool for students on campus but also probably one of the most underutilized,” Jordan Terry, a graduate assistant in the writing center said. “We offer services that give students the ability to grow their writing skills in a natural way, instead of just giving them the answers and fixing their grammar.”
Students can make an appointment online at mywconline.com/Winthrop or stop by the writing center to set up an appointment.
Down the hall from the writing center in room 271, the math department offers the Mathematics Tutorial Center (MTC). Here students can meet in person with a tutor to get assistance with their math classes.
The MTC primarily helps with students enrolled in MATH 101, MATH 104, MATH 105, MATH 111, MATH 112, MATH 141, MATH 150, MATH 151, MATH 201 and MATH 291, but can help with any mathematics course.
Students do not need to make an appointment with the MTC for tutoring, but students are urged to bring their Winthrop ID, textbook, notes, and calculator with them. Hours of operation can be found on the Winthrop website.
“Some students like to use this space to work on homework since there is someone right there to get help as they need it,” Dr. Abernathy, the director of the MTC said. “It’s also a great resource to study for a test or just get help with math concepts!”
The Academic Success Center (ASC) offers peer tutoring in over 50 general education classes. According to the Winthrop website the mission of the ASC “is to support the academic pursuits of undergraduate students and to promote self-regulated, lifelong learning through a variety of services.”
The ASC also sometimes offers workshops and seminars on note taking, test taking, textbook reading, time and stress management, and study strategies.
Students can make an appointment with the ASC by creating an account with tutortrac and selecting their class and the time they want to be tutored.
The College of Business Administration offers tutoring for select classes. Tutoring for CSCI 101 can be found in Thurmond 515 and in Thurmond 104 students can be tutored in ACCT 280, ACCT 281, ECON 215, ECON 216, QMTH 205, QMTH 210. These sessions are on a first come first serve basis.
Dacus Library offers a service called “Book a Librarian” where students are able to set up an appointment with a librarian either in person or on zoom and ask questions. Some students use this service to get assistance in finding sources for their research assignments.
“I used Book a Librarian for my developmental psychology research paper, and I booked Cody,” Savannah Dover, a student worker in user services and circulation in Dacus, said. “My original topic was really hard to find any articles on, but Cody worked with me for about an hour trying to find at least something.”
Students are also given the option to meet the librarian in person and walk around campus while talking about their topic or asking questions about the services.
“It’s a great free service that is incredibly helpful to students,” Dover said. “It teaches you how to work the databases and the librarians are super knowledgeable about all things in the library and can find outside sources for you.”
Students are encouraged to use the various academic services that are provided by the university to help strengthen their skills in a particular field and help boost their grades. If students cannot find tutoring for a specific class, they are encouraged to create study groups with their professors and classmates.
