Close Scholars Program Found Dies at 95

Winthrop Close Scholars Program Founder, Anne Springs Close has died at the age of 95.

The philanthropist from Fort Mill founded the Anne Springs Close Greenway, a nature preserve in Fort Mill.

Close’s 72 years of effort have benefitted many of the residents in Fort Mill and surrounding areas. The Greenway is known to many, as a place to visit for youth programs, concerts and events, and a multitude of outdoor activities.

While Close dedicated her life to conservation, she also donated generously to Winthrop University.

According to Winthrop Interim President George W. Hynd, Close was in discussions with Vice President for Student Affairs Shelia Burkhalter on the details of a junior year study abroad experience for the Close Scholars Program that will launch in 2023.

“Through those students, Anne Close reached thousands of people while at the same time shaping generations of Winthrop graduates for bright futures filled with a passion for serving others,” Hynd said. “We know her legacy will continue here at Winthrop and through each student that was touched by her generosity and kindness.”

Anne Springs Close’ legacy will continue to impact the Winthrop community.
