George W. Hynd has been selected as the preferred candidate for the interim president of Winthrop University.
If approved by the board of trustees on Friday, Hynd will serve from March 1, 2020, to June 30, 2022.
The board of trustees will vote on his appointment on Friday, Jan. 31 at 11:30 a.m. If approved at this meeting, Hynd will be formally announced at noon the same day, in Dina’s Place. This is an open introduction where Hynd will answer audience questions.
Hynd has served at many institutions in administrative positions. He was the interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and interim provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
From 2010-14, Hynd was provost and executive vice president of academic affairs at the College of Charleston.
Hynd also has experience serving as the president of a university. He was president of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan from 2014-2017.
Hynd’s appointment ends an “accelerated search” for an interim president that meets “criteria identified by current trustees, senior leadership, faculty, staff and students as important for a new leader to possess” following Dan Mahony’s resignation, according to Board of Trustees Chair Glenn McCall.
“After reviewing applications and talking to a diverse group of candidates, I’m pleased to say that George Hynd fulfilled most all of the criteria voiced by our campus community and that he strongly desires an interim role to assist Winthrop as we plan for our future,” McCall said in a press release from the university.
