#ThemToo

The #MeToo movement started when accusations of Hollywood producer, Harvey Weinstein, came about. These accusations were linked to dozens of sexual assault allegations. Some of Hollywood’s best actresses have come out to say that they have experienced this type of behavior from Weinstein. So began the hashtag, #MeToo, on twitter to share and empower women from all over to stand up and defend their own body and life. Other men and actors have rallied behind these strong women in their endeavors and supported them in the sharing of their own stories by joining in on not only the hashtag but the movement as well. But of course, there is nothing too great without a backlash from attention seekers and liars. The field is divided with sceptics on one side and those standing up for their right to share their stories on the other.

Even with all of the people who have been victimized to this unspeakable atrocity, there are those who will jump on the bandwagon and lie to get attention. Could this be false memory planting, or simply attention seeking? False memory planting is simply defined as an indoctrinated memory placed in one’s mind that alters their own previous reality. In other words it’s a delusional disorder that shapes one’s own perceptions of their own memories from scenarios brought up from a third party.

The backlash comes from a variety of different sources. Claire Fallon from Huffpost says that, “It transforms what ought to be a movement for women’s empowerment into an emblem of female helplessness.” But why would it be? Another source from Mashable says that, “…modern feminism has encouraged women to think of themselves as victims first.” Personally I can see both sides of this argument, along with that the flaws on both. On one side you have what Mashable refers to as “snowflakes” (the victims) and the true side of the victimized. Mashable goes on to say that we collectively as a society have given into this notion and allowed women to be “oversensitive” by projecting the image of women being “soft and compliant.” We as a society need to act on this and change the image of women to show the strong and individualized side of them. If you have ever been affected by these horrible acts of sexual misconduct, don’t let your voice go unheard, stand up for your body and life.
