Eagle of the Week: Lauren Morris

During every game for a sports team, there are intense moments that come and go with each season. From hard-fought wins to close games, it takes a lot of work to acknowledge the close wins by our hard working athletes.

According to Winthrop Athletics, the Winthrop women’s lacrosse team played against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs at Eagle Field on Saturday, April 6. The game ran into double against Gardner-Webb. Winthrop lacrosse Middle and sophomore Lauren Morris was the player that achieved the winning goal for the Eagles, noting the difficulty of the match and how teamwork helped in their victory.

“Our game against Gardner-Webb was very close in score the entire game. Going into overtime wasn’t ideal, but thankfully we were able to pull off a win because of our team work,” said Morris.

A notable fact about the Winthrop lacrosse team was the inclusion of new players from incoming students, which fostered uncertainty for the season in the fall and spring. However, the hard work of the team paid off in each game.

“Gaining so many freshmen this year had me unsure about how this season would play out, but I think that we have worked really hard to be where we are now,” said Morris.

One of the key factors for preparing against Gardner-Webb was recruiting players from other universities, such as Mercer University, and improving on their offense and defense.

“Scouting Mercers players helped us prepare for the game. We also worked on small details for offense and defense that needed to be tweaked in order to come out and play our best,” said Morris.

The game had featured the Winthrop Eagles fighting aggressively against the Bulldogs with both teams reaching overtime with a score of 13-13. Near the end of overtime, players McKenna Blick and Mia Creighton helped pass the ball to Morris to gain the winning shot, showing the importance of teamwork between players in the Lacrosse team in games.

“We have come a long way as a team since the fall season and finally understand what works well for us. Winning games is only possible if we work together as a team and accomplish the small things in order to reach our bigger goals,” said Morris.

The next game for the Winthrop women’s lacrosse team is against Presbyterian Blue Hose on April 10, with another game coming up afterward. Morris noted how every game matters for the team in improving the morale of the team.

“Every conference game is important for us. Each win just gives us more confidence to go into the next game,” said Morris.

With the upcoming conference games in the following weeks, the athletes of the lacrosse team including Morris do have plans to work over the summer to prepare for the next season in spring 2020.

“Over the summer we are given a workout packet that will help us prepare for the next season. It is important to continue to work out and use our sticks, so we are ready to go once we get back to school in the fall,” said Morris.
