Golf prepares to hit the course

The Winthrop University Men’s Golf Team is preparing for the upcoming 2018 fall season. This year, the team will compete in five events on various courses against different competitors.

Head coach Kevin Pendley, a former golf standout at Winthrop, is entering his 12th season as the head men’s golf coach.

The Eagles will play on two courses, Hattiesburg CC and Firestone CC, that have hosted a combined 64 PGA Tour events and major championships between them.

Winthrop Eagle, Tyler Koch, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season. “I’m really excited for the season. We have a great competitive schedule lined for the fall and spring in order to prepare ourselves for the conference tournament. The Big South is loaded with great talent, but our tough schedule will help us to be mentally unbreakable,” Koch said.

This team will be facing various tough fields throughout the fall season. Each tournament will contain at least one competitor who made it to NCAA Regionals following the 2017-18 season.

The Eagles will also be on the road during the fall season. They are set to travel a total distance of over 420 miles throughout the fall.

The Eagles return with a number of experienced players who have all contributed to the tournament performance of the Eagles in previous years. They also bring in two new faces, including sophomore transfer Ryan Tattan from Essex, England and freshman Louis Chen from Shenzen, China.

Returning to compete for the Eagles are seniors Michael McKee, Sawyer Mills and Vijay Mishra . Junior Zak Butt with sophomores Rohan Boettcher, Tyler Koch, and Noah Peterson finish out the team.

My past two years at Winthrop have been motivating for me to try and prove myself, so I can be a better asset for my team,” said Koch. “In order to help my team succeed, I try to make sure I do the little things in the classroom, weight room, and on the golf course to ensure that I am being the best teammate and role model I can possibly be. I am excited to be apart of this great team and institution at Winthrop.”
